COHASSET — The Cohasset Police would like to make residents aware of a black bear seen in Norwell. It may make its way to Cohasset. It is likely to be same bear who has been travelling throughout southeast MA by several area police departments, and has been seen in various towns across the South Shore.
Please note that if the bear is sighted in Cohasset, you do not need to call to report it to the Cohasset Police unless it is a hazardous situation for you or for the bear. The Massachusetts Department of Fish and Game will only take steps to relocate the bear if it is in danger.
Published reports by local PD’s and various Facebook groups have said this has not been the case so far. The bear has been very docile and is a sight to see!
If you see a bear, do not approach it, attempt to scare it, or leave food out for it. Experts recommend these steps below to to make your property less attractive when there is bear activity in your area:
– Remove bird feeders, the blue jays will chomp at Bears snout!
– Secure all trash/recycling containers. Under normal circumstances, Bear loves dumpster diving. Might be too hot today though.
– Clean/cover all grills. Bear likes that new Traeger pellet grill that Dad just got and burned his $100 rack of ribs in.
– Don’t leave sweet treats outside. You hear that Dunks? Don’t leave the empty donut glaze bucket by the dumpster – bear loves glaze!
– Remove any outdoor pet food, the bear has made it clear that he does not like to associate with the feral cats that you may be feeding – too aggressive for him.
– Tell your neighbors if you see the bear, the bear loves his picture taken.
To protect your pets, consider not leaving them outside in your yard alone and when walking a dog, use a leash (so you can control them and remove them should you encounter a bear). The bear is afraid of your little Jack Russel Terrier that thinks he is a bear himself.
If the bear becomes aggressive or is in danger itself, please do not hesitate to call 911 or Cohasset Police at 781-383-1212 however we assume that the bear will most likely continue his Town by Town appearances and will find his way back towards wherever he came from.
